Benign Vascular Lesions: Broken Veins and Capillaries

Our face has an extensive network of veins and tiny blood vessels which are called capillaries. Over time, certain factors such as aging, trauma, and particularly sun exposure can cause these capillaries to break appearing on the skin’s surface as red lines and blotches.

Ellipse IPL therapy can eliminate damaged veins and capillaries by a process known as ‘Photothermolysis’ (meaning light + heat + destruction) . This refers to the focussing of a specific wavelength of laser light on a target area with a specific colour, in this case red as in spider veins. The laser energy produces enough heat to damage the target area (capillaries) whilst leaving the surrounding area relatively untouched.

Generally 3-4 treatments are required, spaced 4 weeks apart for the best results. The skin must be kept as pale as possible during this timeframe. This is achieved by wearing sun protection (SPF30+) and avoiding sun exposure before and during your course of treatment.
